Northside Hospital in Atlanta has been designated a Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology (COEMIG) by the AAGL and Surgical Review Corporation. The designation recognizes consistency in delivering safe, effective, evidence-based care.
“Northside Hospital has always welcomed advancement in minimally invasive surgery for the betterment of care for our patients,” said Ceana Nezhat, M.D., program director for minimally invasive gynecologic surgery at Northside. “In fact, in the early 1980’s, treatment of the most severe cases of endometriosis by videolaparoscopy was first performed at Northside; this led to the development and first cases of many minimally invasive procedures in colorectal, urologic and general surgery, which are the standard of care today.”
The COEMIG program is focused on improving the safety and quality of GYN patient care and expanding awareness of and access to minimally invasive gynecology procedures, performed by surgeons and facilities that have demonstrated excellence in these advanced techniques. The COEMIG designation is available to surgeons, hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers around the world that provide minimally invasive GYN surgical care on an inpatient and outpatient basis.
To earn the designation, Northside provided information on all aspects of its minimally invasive GYN program and processes, including data on its surgical outcomes. The hospital and its surgeons also demonstrated their partnership and cross-organizational commitment to minimally invasive GYN surgical care.
